........…from all of us who have survived the “descent of man” image from the 1860’s and found a new awareness in the aftermath of 9/11.

Nine/eleven was a wake-up call. We wondered at the new set of choices it laid before us. If we label them “terrorists” what word sets us apart? Is it “Homo sapiens”? I think not! If not Homo – then what?

Can we agree that we are more than body? Perhaps agree that we are “body-with-mind” perhaps even “mind-with-body”? The choice between these two is significant because the choice is of domain. Is the body in charge, or is the mind in charge? The seemingly slight difference offers a big difference of self-image affecting Mankind. The self-image of descent vs. the self-image of ascent is the difference between “Homo sapiens and Human Beings.” We have to make a choice here because we become as we think!

“I am a Human Being” was the cry heard often on the interviews after 9/11. It was “the man on the street’s” way of comparison to the terrorists. The word for us just came out naturally, as though it is who we are, with no reference to the educated way of speaking. Homo sapiens was the left-over after Darwin, out of place in the new world suddenly upon us. This is the context in which THE HUMAN BEING was published, having been under preparation since 1980 as a sister book to BECOMING...Coming Into Being. 9/11 provided the need, and the book went to press the following year.
